Project Record: Overcoming Coastal Soft-soil Challenges | Soft-soil Improvement of JD Asia-One Zhongshan Huangpu Logistics Park

The JD Zhongshan E-commerce Industrial Park & Operation Settlement Center (JD Asia-One Zhongshan Huangpu Logistics Park) has a total investment of approximately RMB 900 million and covers a land area of 305 mu. As a large-scale modern e-commerce logistics hub integrating smart warehousing, multimodal transport, urban distribution and comprehensive services, it serves Zhongshan and western South China and was put into operation at the end of 2023.

Located in Sule Village, Huangpu Town, Zhongshan City, the project has a total land area of 203 408.1 m², among which 79 187.8 m² (road zone) is subject to soft-soil improvement.

The site features typical coastal soft-soil geology with widely distributed silt and silty-soil layers. Characterized by high moisture content, high compressibility and low bearing capacity, the ground is prone to uneven settlement and cannot directly meet the load standards for construction and subsequent operation of the large-scale park.

After comparison and demonstration of multiple schemes considering improvement performance and economic benefits, the vacuum preloading plus water-loaded preloading technique was adopted for ground consolidation. The whole soft-soil improvement work was undertaken by Guangzhou Sunzo Foundation Engineering Co., Ltd.

Against the construction challenges brought by deep coastal soft soil in the Pearl River Delta, the project team efficiently completed ground consolidation for nearly 80 000 m² by virtue of proven core vacuum-preloading technology and standardized on-site management system.

Upon completion, all indicators including site bearing capacity and settlement met design and specification requirements, effectively solving foundation problems such as settlement and instability of coastal soft soil.

The solid and stable foundation establishes a sound safety guarantee for subsequent main-structure construction, intelligent-equipment operation and heavy-vehicle circulation within the park.
